1. Base of the Basket (Oval)

We start by crocheting an oval shape for the bottom of the basket. Use a tight tension to ensure the basket holds its shape.

  1. Start: Ch 16 (This determines the length of the basket. Add or subtract chains to change the size).

  2. Round 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 13 ch. Work 3 sc in the last ch. Now working up the opposite side of the chain: Sc in the next 13 ch. Work 2 sc in the very last st. Sl st to the first sc to join. (Total 32 sts).

  3. Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in the first st. Inc in the next st. Sc in the next 13 sts. Inc in the next 3 sts. Sc in the next 13 sts. Inc in the next 2 sts. Sl st to the first sc to join. (Total 38 sts).

  4. Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in the first 2 sts. Inc in the next st. Sc in the next 14 sts. (*Sc in next st, inc in next st*) repeat from * 3 times. Sc in the next 14 sts. (*Sc in next st, inc in next st*) repeat from * 2 times. Sl st to the first sc to join. (Total 44 sts).

    • Continue adding increase rounds until the base is the desired size, maintaining the oval shape.

2. Building the Sides (Height)

Now we work without increases to create the vertical sides of the basket.

  1. Round 1 (Defining the Side): Ch 1. Working in the Back Loop Only (BLO) for this entire round, sc in each st around. Sl st to the first sc to join. (This round creates a defined edge where the sides begin).

  2. Round 2 and subsequent rounds: Ch 1. Working through both loops, sc in each st around. Sl st to the first sc to join.

  3. Repeat this round until the basket wall reaches the desired height (e.g., 6–8 rounds).

3. Shaping the Pouch Opening

This step creates the angled, open front of the basket.

  1. Flatten the Basket: Fold the basket flat so the joining seam is on the back edge. The front edge is where the opening will be.

  2. Mark the Center Front: Place a stitch marker at the center st on the front of the flattened oval.

  3. Next Round (Start of Opening): Ch 1. Sc in each st around the back half and sides of the basket until you reach the center front (the marker).

  4. Work the Decs: Turn your work (do not join). Work a row of decreasing stitches across the front section to pull the sides together.

    • Row 1 (Dec): Ch 1. Dec across the front stitches until only a few stitches remain. Sc in the remaining stitches. Ch 1, turn.

  5. Row 2 (Dec/Shaping): Continue working rows flat, decreasing one stitch at the beginning and end of each row (Dec in the first 2 sts, sc across, Dec in the last 2 sts) until only 3-5 stitches remain at the top center.

4. The Hanging Loop

  1. Start the Loop: On the last row of the shaped section, ch 1. Sc in the remaining 3-5 stitches. Ch 1, turn.

  2. Loop Chain: Work a long chain (e.g., ch 30-40) for the hanging loop length.

  3. Attach Loop: Skip the first st on the last row. Sl st into the last remaining st.

  4. Sc back down the chain: Working back down the chain you just made, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch back toward the pouch.

  5. Finish Loop: Sl st into the remaining center stitches on the top of the pouch to secure the loop.

  6. FO and weave in all ends securely.
