“Starfall Christmas Tree Skirt”

Technique: Half-Square Triangles (HST)
Finished Size: 48″ (122 cm) octagon
Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials

  • 1 yard (0.9 m) background fabric (cream or white)

  • 1 yard assorted Christmas prints for the star

  • 1½ yards backing

  • ½ yard binding

  • Batting (at least 52″ square)

Cutting

Cut 4″ finished HSTs (4½” squares before sewing):

  • Background: 40 squares (4½”)

  • Star colors: 40 squares (4½”)

Cutting for center hole + slit will be done after quilting.

Templates

You need:

  • A 45° wedge template OR draw an octagon using a ruler.

  • Center circle: 4–5″ diameter.

Instructions

1. Make Half-Square Triangles

Pair 1 background square + 1 print square.
Draw diagonal line, sew ¼” on both sides, cut apart.

Total: 80 HST units.

Press seams open.

2. Build the Starburst Panels

Arrange HSTs into 8 identical wedges, each forming rays that move outward.

Each wedge = 10 HSTs arranged in a diagonal “burst”.

Sew HSTs in rows, then assemble each wedge.

3. Join the Wedges

Sew wedges together to create a full octagon.

Press seams open.

4. Layer & Quilt

Make a quilt sandwich:

  • Backing (right side down)

  • Batting

  • Top

Quilt with echo quilting around each star ray, or long lines from the center outward.

5. Add Center Hole & Slit

Cut:

  • a 4–5″ center circle

  • a straight slit from the edge to the center

Reinforce with stitching before binding.

6. Bind

Use bias binding around:

  • outer edge

  • slit

  • inner circle
