Classic Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate

Finished Size

Approximately 36″ × 36″ (91 × 91 cm)

The size can easily be adjusted by adding or removing squares.


Materials

  • Worsted Weight Yarn (Category 4)
    • White – approximately 800 yds
    • Baby Blue – approximately 800 yds
  • 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet

Blanket Construction

The blanket is made from 36 squares arranged in a 6 × 6 layout.

There are two square designs:

  • Solid Textured Square
  • Flower Granny Square

Alternate them throughout the blanket.


Pattern 1 – Solid Textured Square

Round 1

Magic Ring

Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch)

Work 12 hdc into the ring.

Join with sl st.

(12 sts)


Round 2

Ch 2.

2 hdc in each stitch around.

Join.

(24 sts)


Round 3

Ch 2.

1 hdc, 2 hdc in next stitch.

Repeat around.

Join.

(36 sts)


Round 4

Continue increasing evenly until the square measures approximately 6 inches (15 cm).

Do not fasten off.


Squaring Round

Work as follows:

Along each side:

  • 18 sc

In each corner:

  • sc
  • ch 2
  • sc

Continue around.

Join.

Pattern 2 – Flower Granny Square

Round 1

Using White

Magic Ring

Ch 3.

Work:

  • 15 dc into ring.

Join.

(16 dc)

Round 2 (Petals)

Join Baby Blue.

In each stitch work:

(sc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, sc)

Repeat around.

You will have 8 petals.

Round 3

Join White behind the petals.

Work:

  • ch 3
  • 3 dc
  • ch 2
  • 4 dc

into each corner space.

Between corners work:

4 dc.

Continue around.

Join.


Round 4

Continue as a traditional granny square.

Each side receives one additional granny cluster.

Corners remain:

4 dc

ch 2

4 dc

Repeat until the square measures approximately 6 inches (15 cm).

Joining the Squares

Arrange the squares like a checkerboard.

Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid

Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower

Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid

Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower

Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid – Flower – Solid

Join all squares using:

  • Slip Stitch Join
    or
  • Single Crochet Join

Both produce a raised seam similar to the blanket shown.


Border

Round 1

Work one round of sc around the entire blanket.

At each corner:

(sc, ch 2, sc)


Round 2

Work hdc around.

Corners remain:

hdc, ch 2, hdc


Round 3 – Scalloped Edge

Skip 1 stitch.

Work 7 dc into the next stitch.

Skip 1 stitch.

Sl st into the next stitch.

Repeat around.

This creates the soft scalloped edge.

Blocking

Lightly steam block the blanket to open the flower motifs and straighten the seams.
